The People Behind Pure Magic
Meet the founders, filmmakers and actors of Pure Magic Pictures, an independent film studio in Brooklyn, New York.
Kalani Hubbard
Writer / Director / Actor, Co-founder of Pure Magic Pictures
Kalani Hubbard is a writer and director best known for his fantasy films Ghost Punchers and the Skye Hoshi series. An indie hit maker, he saw Ghost Punchers, his movie about ghost-punching and hot dogs, draw more than 380,000 viewers in its opening weekend. That's the equivalent of 19 sold-out Madison Square Gardens, which is why Kalani likes to joke, "I sold out MSG with my stand-up act with Ms. Shadow." The film went on to rank #4 in Fantasy on Amazon Prime Video, right next to Spielberg's Hook and ahead of Wicked.
With his wife, Stefanie, Kalani co-founded the film studio Pure Magic Pictures. There he has personally directed acclaimed fantasy films including the Skye Hoshi: Anime Girl trilogy, The Squatchers, and Ghost Punchers. His six features anchor an interconnected cinematic universe that now spans more than ten Pure Magic films.
Kalani tells big, bold (and sometimes outrageous) stories with genuine honesty and heart. His voice blends comedy, sincerity, and adventure, drawing on a lifelong love of classic 80s fantasy and anime. He's also an accomplished musician and actor, and he brings that artistry to every project he takes on.
You'll often find Kalani on panels at Comic Con, Fan Expo, and anime conventions across the country. He and the Pure Magic team travel to screenings and meet audiences face to face, because for them, connecting with the fans is the best part of it all.
The studio's name comes from the feeling Kalani gets when he watches his favorite films, a sense of pure magic. It's that spark in your heart when a story completely captures you, and every Pure Magic film is made to pass that spark on to the audience.
